Dental implant options explained

There is no single “implant treatment”. The right solution depends on how many teeth are missing, the bone you have and what you expect from the result.

A dental implant is a small post – usually titanium, sometimes zirconia – that is placed in the jawbone and takes over the role of a tooth root. Once it has bonded with the bone, it carries a crown, a bridge or a full set of teeth. Around that simple idea there are several very different treatments.

How a dentist chooses between them

The starting point is always an examination with imaging. A dentist looks at how many teeth are missing or failing, the height and width of the bone, the position of nerves and sinuses, your gums, your bite and your general health. Your own priorities count too: fixed or removable teeth, how many trips you can make, and your budget.

SituationSolutions often discussed
One tooth missingSingle-tooth implant with a crown
Two or more neighbouring teeth missingImplant bridge or several single implants
All teeth in a jaw missing or failingAll-on-4 / All-on-6 or an implant-supported denture
Not enough boneBone grafting or sinus lift first, sometimes alternative techniques

These are typical patterns, not rules. Two people with the same number of missing teeth can receive quite different recommendations.

Common questions

Which implant option is the best?

There is no best option in general. The most suitable one depends on your bone, your remaining teeth, your health and your preferences. A dentist recommends it after an examination.

Are implants always fixed?

Most implant solutions are fixed, but implant-supported dentures are removable on purpose – they are easier to clean and can need fewer implants.
