Several missing teeth: the implant bridge

When two, three or more teeth are missing side by side, they do not always need one implant each. An implant bridge spans the gap on fewer implants.

The idea

An implant-supported bridge is a row of connected crowns that rests on implants instead of on your natural teeth. A three-unit bridge, for example, can sit on two implants with one floating tooth in between. The exact number of implants depends on the length of the gap, the bone and the forces of your bite.

Planning matters

Implant positions are planned from the final teeth backwards: first the dentist decides where the new teeth should be, then where implants can support them. A CBCT scan and, increasingly, digital planning help with this. Ask your dentist to show you the plan and to explain why each implant goes where it goes.

If most teeth in a jaw are missing, a full-arch solution may be more practical than several separate bridges.

Common questions

How many implants does a bridge need?

Commonly two implants for a three- or four-unit bridge, but this depends on bone quality, position in the mouth and your bite. Only a dentist can decide.

Can an implant bridge be attached to natural teeth?

Combining implants and natural teeth in one bridge is generally avoided because they move differently under load.
