Who can have dental implants?
Most adults who have lost teeth can be considered for implants. Whether they are right for you depends on a few health and anatomy questions a dentist will check.

Usually good starting conditions
- the jaw has finished growing;
- there is enough bone, or it can be rebuilt;
- gums are healthy or gum disease has been treated;
- you are willing to clean carefully and attend check-ups.
Factors that need careful assessment
- Smoking – slows healing and increases the risk of implant problems. See smoking, diabetes and implants.
- Diabetes – well-controlled diabetes is often compatible with implants; poorly controlled blood sugar is a concern.
- Medication – for example certain bone medications (such as bisphosphonates), blood thinners or immunosuppressants.
- Radiotherapy to the head and neck in the past.
- Untreated gum disease or active infection in the mouth.
- Heavy grinding (bruxism).
- Pregnancy – elective surgery is generally postponed.
Please be open about your health. Tell the dentist about all conditions and medication, including supplements. This is the most important thing you can do for a safe treatment. If in doubt, ask your doctor at home as well.
Age
There is no upper age limit as such. General health, bone and the ability to look after the implants matter more than the number of years.
Common questions
Am I too old for implants?
Age alone is rarely the issue. General health, bone and oral hygiene matter more. A dentist assesses each case individually.
Can I have implants if I have osteoporosis?
Often yes, but the medication used for osteoporosis can be important. Tell your dentist exactly what you take.
