Healing and aftercare after implants
The surgery takes an afternoon; the healing takes months. How you look after the implants in that time – and for years afterwards – has a real influence on the result.

The first days
- Some swelling, bruising and tenderness are normal and usually peak after two or three days.
- Cool the cheek from the outside at intervals on the first day.
- Take medication exactly as prescribed by your dentist.
- Avoid hot drinks, alcohol, smoking and strenuous exercise as advised.
- Choose soft, lukewarm food and chew on the other side.
Hygiene during healing
Keep brushing the rest of your teeth. Around the surgical area, follow the exact instructions you are given – often a gentle rinse at first and a soft brush later. Stitches are removed or dissolve on their own.
Holiday and healing
Bodrum invites you to swim and enjoy the sun, but in the first days after surgery rest is the priority. Ask your dentist when swimming, sunbathing and boat trips are fine again. Our guide implants and a Bodrum holiday has more practical tips.
When to call the dentist
Contact the clinic if bleeding does not stop with gentle pressure, if swelling increases after the third day, if you develop a fever or if something feels loose. Before you fly home, make sure you know how to reach the clinic.
Long-term care
Implants do not get cavities, but the gum and bone around them can become inflamed (peri-implantitis). Daily cleaning with interdental brushes or a water flosser, not smoking, and regular check-ups are the best protection.
Common questions
How long does swelling last after implant surgery?
Swelling usually peaks after two to three days and then settles. If it increases after that, contact your dentist.
Can I fly home right after implant placement?
Often yes for simple cases, but ask your surgeon – especially after a sinus lift or bone graft, where waiting longer may be advised.
