Implant, bridge or denture?
Implants are not the only way to replace missing teeth. Knowing the alternatives helps you understand why a dentist recommends what they recommend.
| Implant | Conventional bridge | Removable denture | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Neighbouring teeth | Untouched | Ground down for crowns | May carry clasps |
| Surgery | Yes | No | No |
| Bone | Helps preserve it | Continues to shrink under the gap | Continues to shrink |
| Feel when eating | Close to natural | Firm | Can move |
| Treatment time | Months | Weeks | Weeks |
When a bridge still makes sense
If the teeth next to the gap already need crowns, a bridge can be a sensible choice. It also avoids surgery – important for people for whom surgery is risky.
When a denture is reasonable
A removable denture can be a good interim or long-term solution, especially when many teeth are missing and budget or health limit other options. Adding two implants can make it far more stable – see implant-supported dentures.
Making the choice
Ask your dentist to explain at least two options for your case with their advantages, disadvantages and long-term care. A good recommendation comes with reasons.
