One trip or two? Planning implant visits realistically
“Everything in one week” is a tempting idea. For implants it rarely matches biology – and understanding why helps you plan better.
Why two trips are the norm
An implant needs time to bond with the bone before it can carry a final crown or bridge. That healing phase usually lasts months, not days. So the typical pattern is: first trip for examination and surgery, home for healing, second trip for the final teeth.
When one trip may be enough
When only consultation and imaging are planned, or when it is clearly agreed that the final crown will be made elsewhere later. These are individual arrangements and need a clear agreement on who does what.
What can add a stage
- larger bone grafts or a lateral sinus lift;
- extractions with infection that should heal before implants go in;
- gum treatment before surgery.
Making the trips work
- Book the first trip with a few spare days after surgery.
- Ask for a written timeline with the earliest and latest realistic date for the second visit.
- Keep the temporary teeth clean and avoid hard food – a broken temporary can force an unplanned visit.
- Clarify whom to contact if you have questions between the trips.
