Smoking, diabetes and implants
Health factors do not automatically rule implants out. But they change the risk – and being open about them is the best thing you can do.
Smoking
Smoking reduces blood flow in the gums and slows healing. It is associated with a higher risk of implant failure and of inflammation around implants later on. Many dentists ask patients to stop smoking for a period before and after surgery. Stopping completely is better still – your dentist or doctor can advise on support.
Diabetes
People with well-controlled diabetes can often receive implants. Poorly controlled blood sugar slows healing and increases the risk of infection. Bring recent blood test results and tell the dentist about your medication. Your doctor at home may need to be involved.
Other factors to mention
- medication for osteoporosis or cancer that affects bone;
- blood thinners;
- autoimmune conditions or immunosuppressive treatment;
- previous radiotherapy to the head or neck;
- heart conditions and implanted devices.
What you can do
- Prepare a complete list of conditions and medication.
- Have gum disease treated before implants.
- Plan to stop smoking well before the surgery date.
- Ask your doctor at home whether there are reasons to be cautious.
