X-ray and CBCT: why imaging comes first

The most useful thing you can send before an implant consultation is not a photo of your smile – it is a recent X-ray.

Panoramic X-ray

A panoramic X-ray (OPG) shows both jaws in a single flat image. It gives an overview of teeth, roots, bone level and obvious problems. It is a good starting point for a first conversation.

CBCT scan

A cone-beam CT shows the jaw in three dimensions. Only this shows the width of the bone and the exact position of nerves and sinuses. For implant planning many dentists consider it essential, at least in more complex cases.

Getting imaging at home

You can ask your dentist or a dental imaging centre at home for a panoramic X-ray or CBCT. Ask for the files in a standard digital format (for CBCT usually DICOM) rather than only a printout or a phone photo of a screen.

How recent should it be?

Teeth and bone change. An image from several years ago may be misleading. Ask the dentist whether your existing images are recent enough.

Sharing it safely

X-rays are health data. Send them only to the people who need them, and avoid public file-sharing links. We will suggest a suitable way when you contact us – please do not attach them to the website form.
